Psychiatry Chapter | NDA-UK
The Psychiatry Chapter of the Nepalese Doctors Association UK (NDA-UK) is dedicated to advancing mental health care and services for both the Nepalese community in the UK and our homeland, Nepal. Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and our chapter aims to address the unique challenges faced by our communities through education, support, and advocacy.
Lead: Dr Arun Jha and Dr Chuda Karki
Our Mission
Our mission is to foster a comprehensive understanding of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and promote mental wellness. We strive to enhance the quality of psychiatric care through continuous professional development, research, and collaboration with mental health professionals in Nepal and the UK.
Objectives
Education and Training: We offer training programs, workshops, and seminars to equip mental health professionals with the latest knowledge and skills in psychiatric care. Our goal is to improve the competency of practitioners in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions.
Research and Innovation: We support and conduct research to advance the understanding of mental health issues prevalent in Nepalese communities. By collaborating with institutions and researchers, we aim to develop innovative solutions and treatment approaches.
Advocacy and Awareness: We work to raise awareness about mental health issues and reduce stigma associated with mental illness. Through public health campaigns and community engagement, we promote a culture of understanding and acceptance.
Support and Collaboration: We provide a platform for mental health professionals to share best practices, resources, and experiences. By fostering a supportive network, we aim to enhance the overall quality of psychiatric care and support systems.
How We Support Nepal
The Psychiatry Chapter actively engages in initiatives to support mental health care in Nepal, including:
Training and Workshops: Conducting training sessions and workshops for psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health workers in Nepal to improve their skills and knowledge.
Mental Health Camps: Organizing mental health camps in remote and underserved areas of Nepal to provide free mental health services and support.
Resource Development: Developing and distributing educational materials, guidelines, and resources to enhance mental health care practices in Nepal.

What is MBRP Programme?
Most of us tend to either give in to craving or fight hard to resist it. Mindfulness is the intentional practice of bringing your attention to the present moment without judging whether it is pleasant or unpleasant. Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) for addictive behaviours is a psychosocial intervention rooted in the ancient Buddhist practice of Vipassana Meditation. MBRP programme focuses on learning to experience triggers and cravings differently. We start learning to identify what triggers us, then observing how these triggers lead to all the sensations, thoughts, and emotions that are often part of craving. We practice observing the experience without “automatically” reacting. Mindfulness can help bring this process into our awareness, allowing us to disrupt the “automatic” chain of reactions that often follows a trigger. This gives us greater freedom to make choices that in the long run make us happier. Patients recovering from drug/alcohol addiction are invited to generate a craving sensation by visualising a trigger situation and dealing with discomfort related to craving through meditative techniques of observation, experiencing and acceptance without reacting. These techniques aim to improve tolerance to discomfort. There is good evidence that MBRP model is successful at reducing both craving and substance use. We have adapted the original 8-week original programme to a shorted 6-week programme to suit Nepalese population. Each week has a 2-hour We are also conducting a research study to explore whether medical and non-medical volunteers can be trained to be MBRP Facilitators.
